The word Dower (Mehr) is related to the Hebrew word “Mohar” and also from the Syriac word “Mehr” which means “Bridal gift” and refers to “purchase money”. The Mehr is considered as the gift in sharia which is presented by the husband to his wife or given to her at the time of marriage or after some time of marriage. In Islamic law and sharia Mehr is the basic right of every woman. Mehr can be a tangible or non-tangible form.

Importance Of Dower (Mehr) in Isalm

Mehr considers as the Nadra marriage certificate (marriage contract), it has two parts Muqad’dam or Mu’akhar. Muqad’dam Mehr is to be given immediately after the marriage ceremony and the Mu’akhar will be considered as promised amount based on the agreed date by the couple.

The Muqad’dam Mehr viewed as important and consider as the initial dowry payment. Mehr is an Islamic fundamental right of every woman so the husband cannot decrease or rude the amount of Mehr on his own. On the death of the husband, the Mehr should be paid from the husband’s wealth or estate because it is the necessary religious requirement.

The profit, if she gets from her property also belongs to her and she will be the only owner of her Mehr. If divorce happens before Marriage then the wife would get the half amount of. If any amount cannot be fixed as has Mehr then the woman can ask about her means. The least Mehr she gets, is a servant provide by her man, lesser than the silver or lesser than any clothes or gift.
